About Designer Decks
A long-form publication about the Australian backyard: how it is designed, how it is built, and how it is kept.

The name is older than this website. Designer Decks, as a trade, was a Queensland outdoor-construction practice based at Burleigh Heads and established in January 1984. The brief then was the same brief that still governs a good backyard: decking, outdoor rooms, patios and pergolas, built as a long-lasting asset rather than a weekend project. A related family practice on the Sunshine Coast carried the name into restorations, insulated patios and boardwalks.
The Wayback Machine did not return a usable capture of designerdecks.com.au while this journal was rebuilt. We have therefore inferred the niche from the surviving public record and from the name itself, and rebuilt the site as what that practice always implied: a serious Australian conversation about designer decks.
We are not a contractor directory and we do not sell boards. We publish essays that an owner can take to a designer, or a designer can take to a certifier. The writing is in Australian English. The climate we assume is this one: UV that strips oil in a season, termites that find a missed barrier, salt that eats a cheap connector, and a council officer who will ask whether the deck is a storey above the ground.
