The desk
Editorial standards
A deck that looks finished and fails in the first summer is a kind of lie. The writing should be harder to fool.
Independence
Designer Decks does not take a secret retainer from a mill, a composite brand or a franchise builder. When a commercial relationship exists, it is labelled. Paid, gifted or guest-post links use rel="sponsored", as set out in the write-for-us guidelines.
Sources
Construction claims that affect safety, fire, structure or waterproofing are framed against the National Construction Code, the relevant Australian Standard, or a named state planning instrument — not against “what the last bloke did”. We distinguish a typical practice from a certified requirement. Where a council varies, we say so.
Voice
We write in Australian English for readers who live with this sun, these termites and this bureaucracy. We prefer the specific noun — spotted gum, BAL-29, concealed joist hanger — to the lifestyle adjective. We do not invent case studies. Composite sketches are labelled as composites.
Corrections
If we get a species, a span table or a planning threshold wrong, write to the contact desk. Substantive corrections are noted on the essay with a date. We do not silently rewrite a piece to pretend the error never happened.
Advice
Nothing here is a substitute for a registered practitioner, a certifier or your local council. A journal can make you a better client. It cannot sign your Form 16.
